The Pettit Center

By Sara Harvey – For many, the New Year brings a renewed focus on health and wellness issues.  Unfortunately, for those of us living in southeast Wisconsin, this time of year can be most difficult when it comes to getting outside to be physically active.

If you are looking for a place to walk or even run before or after work, might I suggest heading to the Pettit National Ice Center?  Yes, the same place you went as a kid to ice skate also offers a running track that is open to the public most days from 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM.  There is a small fee of $4 per visit, but multi-session punch cards are also available.

I usually run at the Pettit a few times each week.  The facility provides peace of mind because I don’t have to worry about running in the dark or in adverse weather conditions.   There is a healthy mix of runners and walkers; I have even seen several Marquette student athletes training at the Pettit over winter break.

There are certain days and times when the track is closed, usually due to a special event at the center; check before heading out.
