March Employee Profile- Connie Knoll, Graduate School of Management

Connie Knoll, assistant to the dean of the Graduate School of Management, strives to make healthy choices whether she is at home, work, or on the go. Every morning she starts her day with an activity such as swimming, biking, yoga, or walking the dog.  Even when she is on vacation at her cottage she enjoys staying active by water skiing or kayaking.  Not only do these exercises keep her active, but she also enjoys them because they have been part of her life for such a long time.

Along with her exercise routine she  eats a variety of nutritious foods.  Connie takes the time to pack a lunch and snacks to bring to work as well as cooking dinner instead of eating out.  She recently set a goal to eat more fish which was a challenge for her, but attending a cooking class here at Marquette proved to her how easy it is to prepare and what to look for when purchasing it.

Connie has attended a number of employee wellness programs, but her favorites are the cooking classes and going to the farmer’s market.   These cooking classes have given her useful tips to sneak more nutrients into foods such as adding peanut butter into a smoothie for protein.  She has also enjoyed going to the Westown Farmer’s Market  in the spring, summer, and fall seasons on Wednesdays during her lunch break to purchase fresh produce.

This healthy lifestyle has benefited her in numerous ways, but her two favorites are only having to take one pill a day which is a multivitamin, and getting a confidence boost after a yearly check-up since her blood pressure and cholesterol levels are always where they should be.

Being active has always been a part of her life and her suggestion to make healthy changes is to go outside for a nice walk, “…when the weather is nice, you will get a natural boost from the sunshine along with vitamin D”!   As everyone knows, it is not always easy to get the motivation to eat healthy and exercise if you are tired from work, but her enthusiasm comes from the desire to grow old and healthy with her husband so they can continue to enjoy each other’s company and travel together.  She is also inspired from her father-in-law who still wants to snow and water ski at 77 years old!

Connie’s active lifestyle and participation in the wellness program has had many benefits, as the 2012 Marquette Be Fit Challenge Grand Prize Winner, Connie won a year-long Rec Center/ Plex Membership!

Think of how a healthy lifestyle will benefit you and the loved ones in your family, and come on and participate in a group fitness class or get cooking tips at a Marquette Employee Wellness Program!
