Relieving With Rhythm

Everyone knows a few things about stress: We all get it, and we all have specific symptoms that can make a tough week push you to your limits. So, how does one combat the inevitable? There are certain routines that are suggested to help sidestep stress. However, sometimes the solution is not avoiding stress, but figuring out how to cope with stress by using various tools that can help you maintain a healthy morale throughout the week. One such tool is music.

Music can be used at any time of the day. It is one of the most powerful tools to help someone calm down or unwind and make their mental health a priority. There are a few key points in the day when having a pleasant background ambience could boost your emotional wellness and keep you productive.

To start, try going through your morning motions with some background music. Not only will it be soothing, it will also set the tone for how you want to feel for the day. According to PsychCentral, “…slow, quiet, classical music can have a beneficial effect on our physiological functions, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress hormones.”

Skip the talk radio and try playing something more relaxing on the way to work as you deal with all the weekday morning traffic. Peaceful music may smooth those commuting tensions and help you avoid road rage on the way to drop the kids at school or on your drive to the office.

Taking note of your work environment is also extremely important. Is your personal space being bombarded with the chatter of coworkers or the background noise of office distractions? If so, putting on a peaceful Pandora or Spotify channel could help you stay focused and calm through all the disruptions. Even if you think that the addition of music would make you more on edge, it is worth having a trial of change to see if the difference could work for you.

Besides these options, one of the best times to loosen up is when you need it the most: doing housework. The last thing one wants to do at the end of the day is go home and clean the house and cook dinner, so why not spice it up? Putting on some classic throwback album while you do daily chores is a great way to lift your spirits and make the time go faster. No one thoroughly enjoys routine chores, so why not turn it into positive “you” time to forget about the hundreds of other responsibilities that have been stressing you out all day?

The importance of music is that it does not take away your stress or problems, but it gives you a small window of relaxation or energy that could be built into your day. If you focus on having a happy musical mantra, you will feel less tense about daily nuances and more inspired to be in the best mental state for you.
